1000 Tips by 100 Eco Architects | Marta Serrats

The process of executing an architectural plan, a building or the process of executing an architectural plan, a building or a landscape, can be disastrous for the environment. The construction process, whether it is erecting a building or excavating a landscape, is destructive. Toxic land sites are disturbed, trees are removed, bedrock is shattered, watercourses are altered. And it goes on - buildings cause erosion and ongoing water pollution and worldwide they consume a quarter of all energy produced. Fortunately there are numerous ways through which buildings and landscape can be designed to mitigate such negative impacts. 1000 Tips by 100 Eco Architects shows how forward-thinking design and environmentally sound construction practices can create outstanding results. Coming from the world's leading eco-architecture firms, these real-life projects demonstrate the pinnacle of progressive design and eco restraint. Working from the essential objectives of economy, sustainability, beauty and function, the 1000 ideas display a wide array of outcomes. Design plans illlustrate the concepts and captioned photographs display the results. Examples include: Reveal Earth's history - Wire-sawing bedrock horizontally creates a beautiful outdoor terrace; Produce white noise - A water curtain buffers city sounds while also creating a place for carefree play; Create new activity - A new island in a lake presents options for activities close to town; Introduce the unexpected - Wavelike wood installations create spots to sit, slide or ride a bike; Echo history - The layout of a new water park recalls the former agricultural plot; Alter scale - Irrigation ditches are transformed into waterways in a water park; Seize opportunity - A quarry is recovered and carved into a pleasing linear landscape; Mix function - A string of water through an education and sports facilities beautifies and encourages recreation. Fully illustrated and featuring the highest standards of world eco architecture, 1000 Tips by 100 Eco Architects is a practical, inspiring and provocative reference ideal for anyone practicing or interested in architecture, environmental conservation and design.

From Studio to Foundry: Preparation for Casting | Jan Sweeney

The ancient art of casting in bronze can seem a mysterious and intimidating process to the ceramic artist. In From Studio to Foundry: Preparation for Casting, wildlife sculptor Jan Sweeney demystifies the practice and offers two fantastic projects that will enable the artist to prepare their work for casting at a foundry. This helps to reduce the costs of working in this durable material, as well as offering an insight into the techniques involved.Beginning with a broad overview of the casting process, and the tools and materials the sculptor needs to prepare their work for a foundry, the book goes on to introduce two exciting projects for bronze casting. The detailed, step-by-step images guide the reader through the process of creating a clay sculpture to be cast in solid bronze, from building the form to making a rubber mould and plaster jacket, pouring and fettling the wax model, and finally delivering it to the foundry. The process for producing a hollow bronze sculpture is then covered in equally instructive detail. The projects enable the reader to not only produce an amazing piece for casting, but to learn and fully understand the process from start to finish. It also includes information on key things to look for and ask when choosing your foundry. This much-needed handbook is the essential reference for any artist wishing to produce their work in bronze.

C3 Special Grafts: The Old and the New in Architecture |

This special issue’s theme is on grafting strategies in architecture, which can be seen as threefold: reinvention asks the question of what old architecture can offer new; preservation implies that the value of history is for its own sake; and restoration suggests that the purpose of history is to interact with the present. Included are sixteen recent buildings where the designers have skilfully inserted new architecture into old, in the process addressing architecture’s relationship with time and our relationship with history. With projects by John Pawson, Archstudio, Foster + Partners, Smartvoll, SUMA, Architecten de Vylder Vinck Taillieu, CASCA, Flores & Prats Architects, more.

History of Communism in Europe: Vol. 4 / 2013 | Dalia Bathory, Various Authors

Table of Contents I. Argument Dalia BATHORY: Transitional Justice. Between Political Myth and Civil Society RealityAbstract: Transitional justice emerged as a working concept from the need to clarify the relationship between victims and perpetrators and the latters’ guilt, after the collapse of abusive regimes in Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Since 1995 it has been defined in many ways, by many scholars, according either to its means and goals or to its actors. It has become a very broad concept, describing actions of justice, reparation, search for the truth and reform. While transitional justice policies should result in giving more coherence to a shuttered society, there are at least two threats that must be taken into consideration. One is to transform it into a political myth, by allowing the political factor to confiscate it, the other is to expand its area of concerns in order to cover aspects of daily social problems. The role of the civil society is very important to limit these threats, although what it is that we name “civil society” is still under scholarly debate. The analyses published in this issue of History of Communism in Europe cover these problems in their case studies which come from Latin America or the former Soviet bloc. Most of them stress on the very important role the grassroots actions of members of civil society have on “settling accounts” with the past, actions that seem to be born out of the inefficient “official” measures taken at state level. II. Transitional Justice – Practice and Theory Csaba VARGA: Transitional Justice. Philosophical Foundation and Constitutional Rejection in Hungary Abstract: There are internationally set criteria that apply in the case of a legacy of grave and systematic violations of human rights, generating obligations of the state towards the victims and society. They specify: (1) a right of the victim to see justice done, (2) a right to know the truth, (3) an entitlement to compensation and nonmonetary forms of restitution, as well as (4) a right to reorganized and accountable institutions. Facing the complete failure of implementing the first three points, one can claim that none of them has been fulfilled in Hungary since the fall of Communism, almost one quarter of a century ago. This paper analyses the context in which constitutional adjudication may confront certainty of law with the very idea of justice by putting an end to any progress of leaving the legacy of Communism behind. As a consequence, the Rule of Law becomes a mere simulacrum. III. Transitional Justice at Grassroots: Narrative as a Cure for the Broken Social Fabric Andreas HEMMING: Justice of another Kind. Laying Claims to the Past in Post-Dictatorial Albania Abstract: More than twenty years after the collapse of the totalitarian regime in Albania, the archives of the state security apparatus (Sigurimi) have yet to be opened. The horror of the Hoxha regime remains under lock and key. Not one word is lost on the network of political prisons and the state security apparatus...

History of communism in Europe: Vol. 5 / 2014 | Dalia Bathory, Various Authors

TABLE OF CONTENTSARGUMENTDalia BATHORY: Weaving the Narrative Strings of the Communist Regimes – Building Society with Bricks of StoriesAbstract: The long duration of the Communist regime cannot be explained without closely looking at the manners of creating shared meanings and agreement on explanations on the shared historical context. Narratives of legitimation, some easier to depict than others, were almost as important as the use of force in imposing the specifi c values of the regime. In other words, soft power was the buttress of hard power. But the nuances are numerous, once we put this otherwise obvious remark under closer scrutiny. The case studies presented in this issue of the yearbook underline the practice of combining soft power with hard power: that is, legitimating narrative discourses transmitting sets of values and beliefs, backed up by policies of various forms of violence.I. HEROES AND VILLANS – DEVELOPING THE CHARACTERSStefan BOSOMITU: Becoming in the Age of Proletariat. The Identity Dilemmas of a Communist Intellectual throughout Autobiographical Texts. Case Study: Tudor BugnariuAbstract: Romanian historiography generally states that in Communist Romania there was no intellectual capable of stimulating a “heresy” comparable to those in Yugoslavia (Milovan Djilas), Hungary (Gyorgy Lukacs) or Poland (Adam Schaff ). This is almost true. While the Romanian Communist/Workers Party (RCP/RWP) despised intellectuals, even if they were docile and obedient, in the upper echelons of the RCP/RWP one could hardly fi nd true intellectuals. However, there were some cases that can challenge this narrative – Lucretiu Patrascanu, Grigore Preoteasa, Miron Constantinescu or Tudor Bugnariu. My paper will discuss the case of Tudor Bugnariu, one of the intellectuals seduced by the communist project and ideology in interwar Romania, who later managed to occupy important offi ces within the RCP/RWP and the state structures. By analyzing the narratives of Tudor Bugnariu’s several autobiographical texts, my paper will examine and explain his becoming and the construction of his self-identity and of his “revolutionary” self.Renata KIRIN: Yugoslav Women Intellectuals: From a Party Cell to a Prison CellAbstract: The Yugoslav socialist framework enabled major advances in what concerns the legal, economic and social equality of women, advances which radically changed their traditionally subordinated family and social position. In spite of the postwar period of revolutionary enthusiasm, female political activism and the access of women intellectuals to the male-dominated spheres of journalism, diplomacy, administration and governmental offi ces did not exist for long. Taking into account memoirs and oral histories of fi ve distinguished women, the article reveals the reasons for the Party’s antifeminist attitudes: a) the political fear of ambitious female “quality staff ”; b) the ideological fear of the women guardians of the traditional and religious foundations of collective identity; c) a cultural mistrust toward the mobile woman who easily transcends family, social and ethnic boundaries. These biographical sources reveal that any attempt at free thought and autonomous action outside of the party line was severely punished.II. NARRATIVES OF LEGITIMATIOIN – FROM REALITY TO FICTION THROUGH ARTSBarbara LOACH: Topographies of Identity and Memory: Berlin’s...

FOREWORDRadu Preda: What Must We Not ForgetARGUMENTDalia BATHORY: Authoritarian and Post-authoritarian Practices of Building Collective Memory in Central and Eastern EuropeAbstract: Among the most used expressions in scholarly articles concerning collective memory, is “dealing with the past”, or its more specific alternative, “dealing with the traumatic past”. This is a rather inexact formulation, because what scholars, artist, curators deal with is not the past in itself but the manner in which it is narrated and represented, or remembered, reconstructed. A series of questions are triggered by this statement: who “remembers”, for what purpose, with what consequences? The scope of this yearbook is to present two different ways of approaching the construction of collective remembrance: the authoritarian one and the post-authoritarian one. The articles discuss case studies of collective memory and identity building in Communist Romania, comparative studies of participative art in post-authoritarian regimes in Central and Eastern Europe, or intricate artistic approaches of traumatic collective memoriesI. COMMUNISM EMBEDDED – BOOKS, SHELVES, CURTAINSRuxandra CAMPEANU: “Revis(it)ing the Romanian Cultural Heritage” during Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej’s Regime: The Role of Literary Critics in the Battle for the Canon as a Form of Preserving the Cultural Memory of a CommunityAbstract: As an instrument of preserving the cultural memory of a community, the literary canon is usually a highly stable structure in its core elements. However, with the advent of the Communist regime after the Second World War, the Romanian literary canon underwent a drastic process of reconstruction. As early as the 1940s, what was euphemistically dubbed “revisiting our cultural heritage” actually equated to a radical revision—a purge of the literary canon through the fi lter of Marxism-Leninism. Not only writers of literature, but literary critics themselves were subjected to this process. In this paper, I aim to discuss the role played by literary critics active during Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej’s regime in rehabilitating their predecessors. My focus will be on the press debate surrounding Titu Maiorescu’s rehabilitation in 1963.Claudia SERBANUTA: Memory Exercises in Public LibrariesAbstract: The main roles of libraries are developing and providing access to collections of cultural heritage. While the specific policies necessary to accomplish these roles may vary across diff erent types of libraries, these institutions have at their core a dual role in preserving and supporting access to documents illustrating an era of knowledge and culture. Libraries are thus signifi cant institutions in the process of learning, but also in that of remembering and forgetting at a social level. This article provides an overview of the structure and organization of the public library system in the last two decades of the Communist regime in Romania. As part of a larger information history project, the research discusses the characteristics of this system created to support mass education and the ways in which public libraries also became institutions of memory in Communist Romania. The description of the library system structure is enriched by an overview of the professional training available for librarians and descriptions of the main library services related to access to collections and memories....

History of Communism in Europe: Vol. 7 / 2016 | Dalia Bathory, Various Authors

ARGUMENTDalia BATHORY: "Talkin’bout a Revolution"Abstract: The proclamation of liberal democracy as the absolute winner of the Cold War and the emergence of “prosecutorial” history after the fall of the Eastern Communist Bloc seemed to have established a certain path for researchers with regard to post-war dictatorships in Central and Eastern Europe. A closer look at the meaning of “revolution” as well as at new research efforts reveal strong connections between the East and the West during that time, that determined changes in the pattern and style of the scientific discourse analysing the post-war decades.I. “MAKE – BELIEVE”. COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA AND ITS IMPACT ON SOCIETYEnis SULSTAROVA: “Eurocommunism is Anti-Communism”: The Attitude of the Party of Labour of Albania about Western Communism in the early 1980sAbstract: Following the rift with China, Albania found itself on a lonely road towards pretending to protect the purity of the Marxism-Leninism in Europe. Although diplomatic relations with the West were restricted only to trade, the Albanian Communist leader, Enver Hoxha, was interested in recent developments inside Western Communist parties. Through Eurocommunist theorizations, the parties in Italy, France and Spain abandoned revolutionary aims, incorporated democracy in their ideology and tried to build electoral coalitions with socialist parties and other left-wing forces. By contrast, the Albanian Enver Hoxha considered that Communist revolution was still possible in the world, and the Communist parties still acted as Leninist revolutionary vanguards. From this perspective, he denounced Eurocommunism as a continuation of “revisionism”. This paper will present the attitude of the Party of Labour of Albania about Western Communism by placing it in its historical context and framing it in light of broader debates inside the European Communist movement.Klejd KELLICI, Ermira DANAJ: Promoting Equality, Perpetuating Inequality: Gender Propaganda in Communist AlbaniaAbstract: During Socialism, the “women’s issue” was among the key state policies in Albania. The emancipation issue followed a pattern similar to other socialist countries, called the “women’s emancipation model”. It was part both of the state rhetoric and the general need to include women in the “socialist transformative processes”. This involved policies that supported women's participation in the productive labour force, as well as the introduction of new laws that promoted the equality between men and women.A reconfiguration of gender roles and the gender division of tasks occurred during socialism. In Albania, this process had two distinct phases. From 1944 onward women's emancipation was thought of in terms of their participation as an additional force in the post-war reconstruction effort, even though sporadic and aligned with the primary political needs of the regime. The second phase occurred during the '60s following the Party’s directive “For the complete emancipation of women” (1967). This phase was considered strategic as it coincided with the efforts to industrialize the country and to eventually fully centralize the control over the territory. This paper aims to investigate the entanglements between gender propaganda and gender practices. For this purpose, we analyse various party speeches and policies as well as examples of “heroines” and propaganda movies. A thorough analysis of...

Morphology of Times: European Cities and Their Historical Growth | Ton Hinse

This book highlights radical urban transformation in eight cities spread across continental Europe. The point of departure, and the foundation of European urbanisation, is the Roman colonial town. In every case social dynamics guided the urban transitions in a traceable way, such that it has been possible to deduce the intellectual underpinnings of the contemporary built environments, as featured in these pages. Differing contexts of time and place show the overarching march of European history and related themes at the urban level. Fundamental changes are brought to light. Each story demonstrates a separate and fundamental transition, ranging from earlier collective configurations to the more institutionalised structures of later periods.

Africa Drawn: One Hundred Cities | Gary White, Marguerite Pienaar, Bouwer Serfontein

Africa - a continent of small villages in the jungle and savannah? Certainly not. The urbanisation of the continent is advancing rapidly, while African cities and metropolitan regions are among the fastest growing in the world. Africa Drawn presents one hundred of the most connected and important cities of the continent. A visual feast of three hundred images and masterfully drawn plans illustrates contemporary and historical place-making actions in Africa. The result is simultaneously an artistic and visually fascinating documentation of African urban space and a convincing analysis of its structure and morphology, thus providing a spatial point of departure for all interested parties. The drawings are accompanied by introductory texts and, for the first time, render possible a comparison of the diverse urban form on the continent. The study attempts to provide an indispensable resource of spatial and figure ground patterns in the context of urban space in Africa.

Making Marks: And the Design of Timney-Fowler | Sue Timney

Pointed Leaf Press is proud to announce a monograph on English interior designer Sue Timney. To say that Timney's work is eclectic is as obvious as calling the sky blue: eclecticism is her signature. Perhaps it is her peripatetic childhood that has given her a global vision. Born in Libya, her father's military career took her to Germany and Newcastle, England and she cites influences and interests as diverse as the Japanese filmmaker Kurosawa, the beatniks, and African tribal art. In addition to 25 years worth of captivating photographs and some never before published drawings, textile designs, and personal artworks, 'Making Marks' is a journey through a fascinating life - from a career launched in Japan, to the opening of the first Timney Fowler shop in London's hip Portobello area, and her successful career as an interior designer. An exhibition at the Fashion & Textile Museum in London is planned for November 2010.

Makers of Modern World : Hashemites - Dream of Arabia | Robert McNamara

The story of the Arab Revolt and the Hashemite princes who led it during the First World War is inextricably linked in modern eyes to the legend of "Lawrence of Arabia" as portrayed in David Lean's 1962 film. But behind this romantic image lies a harsher reality of wartime expediency, double-dealing and dynastic ambition, which shaped the modern Middle East and laid the foundations of many of the conflicts that rack the region to this day. Arab nationalists claim that British instigation for the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire was a commitment to independence for the Arab people, but in this book Robert McNamara shows how the British cultivated the Hashemite Sherifs of Mecca more as an alternative focus during the First World War for Muslim loyalty from the Ottoman Sultan, who as Caliph had declared a jihad against the Allies when the Turks joined the Central Powers, than a leader of an independent and united Arabia. At the same time, the Sykes-Picot Agreement divided up the Middle East between British and French spheres of influence. The sense of betrayal that this caused has coloured Arab nationalists' views of the West ever since. The main countries of the Middle East Jordan, Syria and Iraq are all the creations of the post-First World War settlement worked out at the Paris Peace Conference. The story of the Hashemite dynasty at the Paris Peace Conference is the story of the birth of the modern history of a region that is now more than ever at the centre of world affairs.
